Among all of the natural disasters people face, wildfires are unique. Unlike hurricanes, wildfires can be fought. Unlike tornadoes, wildfires can be contained. And people can see them coming, unlike earthquakes. But wildfires used to be a mostly distant and containable threat, and now they move too fast and burn too hot for people to have the same amount of control they once did. As of September 2021, 81 large fires have already destroyed more than three million acres across 10 states, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
